EDTA Chelation Therapy for Atherosclerosis

EDTA CHELATION THERAPY is a safe and effective treatment to restore systemic blood flow in those adversely affected by atherosclerosis, a condition where the arteries become narrowed and hardened due to a buildup of plaque around the artery wall. The disease disrupts the flow of blood around the entire body, posing the risk of serious complications. Dr. Sierra explains how and why atherosclerosis develops as well as its symptoms and treatments, read on for more detail.

EDTA Chelation Therapy is:

  • 100% intravenous drip therapy (no surgery)
  • Outpatient service
  • 2 treatments per week
  • 2 - 3 hours per treatment
  • 10 week duration (most instances)

A state-of-the-art lipid exchange process involving infused Plaque X, might be paired with EDTA.

EDTA Chelation Therapy is an intense process over 10 weeks. Dr. Sierra allows only 7 patients per year resulting in a waiting list at times.

What Is EDTA Chelation Therapy and What Can You Expect:

Chelation Therapy involves the intravenous infusion of a prescription medicine called Ethylene Diamine Tetra-Acetic Acid (EDTA), plus vitamins and minerals at therapeutic dosages between sessions. The disodium EDTA material binds to the calcium in the patient's plaque, removing the hardness, and thereby allows both the immune system and the Plaque X intravenous from the subsequent day to soften and remove the atheroma. A healthy level of cholesterol and a healthy anti-inflammatory diet will encourage the body to reconstitute the arterial wall in a smooth and supple way, essentially regenerating a healthy arterial flexibility and removing years of wear and tear off the arterioles throughout a person's entire circulatory system.

EDTA chelation infusions are administered by slow drip and the materials, comprised of EDTA, magnesium, vitamin C, sodium bicarbonate, B vitamins and procaine, circulate through the blood stream. The entire arterial system is treated as the EDTA removes undesirable calcifications and as an extra benefit, heavy metals stored in soft tissues such as the brain, kidneys, and adrenal glands. Every client for whom we offer EDTA chelation for cardio- and neuro-vascular concerns, will benefit additionally from its effect in removing heavy metals from the body, as EDTA is a disulfide compound that removes lead, cadmium, and mercury, quite effectively and safely.

Some metals such as lead, mercury, cadmium and (and iron in excess) are poisons. Lead and cadmium levels correlate with high blood pressure and overload of iron can cause heart attacks. All metals, even essential nutritional elements, are toxic in excess or when abnormally situated; EDTA normalizes the distribution of most metallic elements in the body. Years before its positive effects for heart and blood vessel and neurological disease became known, it has been used for acute lead toxicity from industrial exposure.

EDTA improves calcium and cholesterol metabolism by eliminating metallic catalysts which cause damage to cell membranes by producing free radicals. Free radical pathology is now believed by many scientists to be an important contributing cause of atherosclerosis, cancer, diabetes and other diseases of aging. EDTA helps prevent the production of harmful free radicals through elimination of these toxic metals. Arterial disease is responsible for strokes, heart attacks, poor circulation and memory loss.

Frequently Asked Questions

How Does Artery Disease Affect Health?

Blockage of blood vessels by plaque (atheroma) reduces the flow of blood, starving vital organs of oxygen and other nutrients. Cell walls then become leaky, allowing excessive calcium, sodium and other elements to enter the mid-wall of the artery. When calcium accumulates to a critical point, concrete-like deposits form. These calcifications can often be seen on X-ray or a dedicated CT scan of the heart, called the coronary calcium scan.

Disordered calcium metabolism can also cause coronaries and other arteries to go into spasm, further reducing blood to vital organs. For still others, the calcification combines with Lyme and Lyme-like organisms and Mycoplasmal bacteria into clusters that allow the bacteria to evade the immune system. In these instances, EDTA can be utilized to help rid the body of these antibiotic evading hiding places.

If diagnostic evaluation or clinical history reveals the formation of calcified deposits, and especially if they are in uneven clumps, the risk of heart attack or stroke is considerable. Many patient only learn of the high degree of arterial calcification they have in their bodies, when these are demonstrated as accidental findings in the lungs with chest x rays, on MRIs of the brain with the finding of micro-calcifications or white hyper intensities, or in the thoracic aorta with a routine x-ray. Others may have opportunity to find these calcifications in the worst of all possible places, the heart itself, through having a dedicated heart scan called study called the coronary cardiac screen, offered at many diagnostic centers. Chelation treatments stops the ongoing progression and removes the pathologic calcification.

What Is The Effect Of These Deposits?

When the flow of blood is interrupted by a calcified deposit it becomes turbulent and under pressure. If part of the deposit breaks away, it is carried at speed in this fast moving blood and may block one of the smaller blood vessels supplied to the artery completely or partially. This causes a stroke if the artery is feeding the brain, or a heart attack if a coronary artery of the heart muscle is involved, or gangrene and amputation if the leg arteries become blocked.

What Causes Loss of Memory and Other Signs of Aging?

It is usually accepted that loss of memory is an inevitable part of the aging process along with dizziness, loss of concentration and defective hearing.

All these conditions are caused by the build up of calcium deposits on the artery walls, often called 'hardening of the arteries'. This results in the deterioration of tissues which are not able to absorb sufficient nutrients and oxygen.

When arteries or capillaries to the heart muscle or to the legs are affected, the cramping pains of angina and intermittent claudicating are experienced. These are the result of the muscles being starved of oxygen and will gradually worsens. Muscle spasm can close a narrowed artery completely; this type of combined process, calcification and spasm, are said to lead to atypical heart attacks in women.

How Does Chelation Therapy Affect Health?

Chelation therapy promotes health by correcting the major underlying cause of arterial blockage. Damaging free radicals are increased by the presence of metallic elements and act as a chronic irritant to blood vessel walls and cell membranes. EDTA removes those metallic irritants, allowing leaky and damaged cell walls to heal. Plaque X softens the plaque through a substitution of phosphatidyl choline with the calcified fatty deposits in the arteries. Plaques smooth over and allow more blood to pass. Arterial walls become softer and more pliable, allowing easier expansion and a normalized blood pressure. Instead of the heart pushing against a hard brittle artery, there is a natural "give" to the vessel which allows the heart to work with the blood vessels instead of pushing hard against an unforgiving brittle arterial wall.

Scientific studies have proven that blood flow increases after chelation therapy. A complete program of chelation therapy involves a broad-based care program of regular exercise, proper nutrition, vitamin and mineral supplementation and avoidance of tobacco and other damaging habits.

What Are The Interactions Between Chelation Therapy And Other Treatments For Artery Disease?

Chelation therapy can be utilized in conjunction with most other therapies for cardiovascular disease. EDTA is compatible with blood thinners, blood vessel dilators, medicines for blood pressure and heart arrhythmias, calcium blockers and beta blockers. The need for drugs is often reduced after a course of chelation therapy.

What Can Be Done To Prevent Heart Attacks, Angina, Strokes, Claudication (Poor Leg Circulation) And The Aging Process?

Clearly, if many of these problems are caused by calcified deposits in the arteries, eliminating the offending material will dramatically reduce the risk of sudden illness and delay and prolong the ageing processes.

This is what chelation does; chelation therapy is especially effective in diabetic conditions.

Who Is At Risk of heart disease and strokes?

1 in 4 Men over Forty - 1 in 5 Women over Fifty years of age and anyone with circulatory problems, or has suffered a stroke or heart attack, or people with a family history of cardiovascular diseases, and those who are becoming aware that they are able to do less as they grow older.

What Can Be Done?

The first step is to have a medical diagnostic evaluation to reveal existing or potential problems or risk factors.

Traditional treatment for high blood pressure, or poor blood supply to the brain, heart or legs, is medication and localized surgery if the arteries are accessible and the patient’s condition permits. Unfortunately this is rarely successful long-term.

For more than forty years in the USA chelation treatment has proved extremely successful in controlling these problems.

Can I Help Myself?

Yes, if you are at risk you can minimize the problem by:

  • Stop Smoking
  • Limit your alcohol intake
  • Balanced nutritional diet
  • Regular exercise
  • Reduce Stress
  • Regular health checks
  • Take note of your risk factors

Can Chelation Be Used As A Preventative?

Yes. Chelation can be, and is used extensively as a preventative treatment, addressing 'free radical' damage and thereby minimizing the risk of cardiovascular problems in the future, especially for those with high risk factors, such as past history of smoking, drug or drink abuse, cholesterol and other hereditary indicators.

What about Safety and Side Effects?

Chelation therapy is among the safest of medical procedures. More than 500,000 patients have received over four million treatments during the past 30 years. Not one death has been directly caused by chelation therapy, when properly administered by a physician who was fully trained and competent in the use of this therapy.

How Do I Know If I Need Or Can Benefit From Chelation Therapy?

If you have chest pain or leg pain on walking, shortness of breath, painful, discolored feet, transient loss of vision, paralysis, or rapidly failing memory, see a physician! Any unexplained or persistent symptoms which affect your heart, head of limbs should be assessed for possible circulatory blockage.

How Will I Be Able To Tell If Chelation Therapy Has Helped Me?

Patients routinely report reduction or elimination of their symptoms with an increasing sense of well being after chelation therapy. Family and friends are often the first to notice and report improvement in appearance, behavior and performance. Comparison of pre- and post- therapy diagnostic tests can provide objective evidence of effectiveness.

How Many Infusions Are Needed?

Each patient if different and it is only after a medical evaluation that an individual can be advised on the likely length of treatment. However historically 20-40 infusions achieve significant improvement. The level of improvement depends upon the individual patient, the severity of the conditions and the strength of each infusion, which is tailored to each patient.

Can Chelation Therapy Be Used After Bypass Surgery?

Yes! Although chelation therapy is best utilized to avoid bypass surgery, many patients who have previously undergone one or more bypass procedures, have subsequently benefitted greatly from chelation therapy. Treatment for each patient must be individualized. If all else fails, including chelation therapy, bypass remains available as a last resort.

DISEASES HELPED BY CHELATION THERAPY

Chelation therapy has been used successfully in many diseases. In most cases, chelation produced marked improvement in circulatory function.

In extreme cases, patients with such issues as diabetic gangrene, and arteriosclerosis obliterans with resulting gangrene, have been able to prevent amputation of extremities.

Cardiovascular patients who have cardiarteriosclerosis and diagnosed as requiring bypass surgery should not get surgery until they have been given chelation therapy. There are many other diseases that can be treated using chelation therapy mentioned in the following paragraphs.

Alzheimer's disease: A progressive form of dementia that usually starts when a person is in their 40’s or 50’s. It begins with impaired memory, which is followed by impaired thought and speech, and finally complete helplessness. In mixed dementia, Alzheimer’s and vascular dementia (reduced blood flow to parts of the brain) occur together. Increasing circulation with liquid chelation therapy brings blood rich in oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body, increasing energy and alertness.

Angina: Chest pain or discomfort that occurs when the heart does not get enough blood due to build up in the coronary arteries. It may feel like pressure or a squeezing pain in the chest. Reducing blockage and increasing circulation through EDTA chelation therapy can help the body function closer to normal.

Arteriosclerosis (Hardening of the Arteries): The thickening and stiffening of the artery walls from too much pressure. It is commonly confused with Atherosclerosis (See Below). Atherosclerosis can lead to Arteriosclerosis, eventually reducing blood flow to the heart or blocking it completely. Reducing blockage and increasing circulation through EDTA chelation therapy, can assure a healthy blood flow with oxygen to the heart.

Atherosclerosis: The build up of fatty deposits in the arteries. Reducing blockage and increasing circulation through EDTA chelation, can assure a healthy blood flow with oxygen to the heart.

Bursitis: Chronic irritation or inflammation of the bursa, a small, fluid – filled sac that helps to reduce friction between tendons and bones. Bursitis can strike anywhere, but it is most common in the ankle, knee, elbow, shoulder and heel. The inflammation may be the result of repetitive or forceful exertions at that joint. Poor circulation can increase inflammation. Increasing circulation through chelation therapy can help the body function closer to normal.

Cardiac Arrhythmia: A common abnormality in the heart’s electrical system, that causes the heart to beat irregularly (too slow or too quickly). Underlying causes include: heart failure, where the heart can’t pump enough blood through the body, and CAD (Coronary Heart Disease) where there is blockage to the flow of blood to the heart. Reducing blockage and increasing circulation through liquid EDTA chelation, can assure a healthy blood flow with oxygen to the heart.

Cardiovascular Disease (CVD): The group of diseases that affect the heart and the blood vessel system (arteries, capillaries, veins) throughout the entire body. These systems play a vital role in supplying oxygen to the brain, heart, and other organs. Increasing circulation through oral EDTA chelation therapy can help the body function closer to normal.

Cholesterol Reduction: The body uses cholesterol (lipid) to help build cells and produce hormones. Too much cholesterol in the blood can build up along the inside of the artery walls. Large amounts can increase the chances of having a heart attack or stroke. By increasing blood flow by removing mineral deposits and heavy metals from the body; liquid EDTA chelation treatment can assist in reducing blockage in the arteries and veins.

Coronary Artery Disease (Heart Disease): A condition in which sticky deposits block the flow of blood to the heart. It affects 10 – 15 million Americans each year and is the #1 killer in America. Without adequate blood flow, the heart will starve for oxygen. Good circulation is vital for keeping the heart healthy with the nutrients it needs to keep the body working properly. Reducing blockage and increasing circulation through oral EDTA chelation, can assure a healthy blood flow with oxygen to the heart.

Diabetes Mellitus: A disease in which the body doesn’t produce or properly use insulin (Insulin Resistance). This causes sugars to build up too high in the blood causing hyperglycemia. Insulin is needed to turn sugar and other food into energy. Insulin resistance is associated with atherosclerosis (fatty build up in the arteries), which increases the risk of heart disease and stroke. By increasing blood flow by removing mineral deposits heavy metals from the body; liquid EDTA chelation therapy can assist in reducing blockage in the arteries and veins.

Diabetic Neuropathy: A common complication of Diabetes Mellitus in which nerves are damaged due to high blood sugar levels (hyperglycemia) and decreased blood flow. Neuropathies can lead to numbness, and sometimes pain and weakness in the hands, arms, feet and legs. Increasing circulation with liquid chelation therapy brings blood rich in oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body, increasing energy and alertness.

Diabetic Retinopathy: The most common eye disease afflicting diabetics. This disease is caused by changes in the blood vessels of the retina and is the leading cause of blindness in American adults. In some people, retinal blood vessels may swell and leak fluid. In others, abnormal new blood vessels grow on the surface of the retina. Increasing circulation through chelation therapy can help the body function closer to normal.

Erectile Dysfunction (ED) / Impotence: There are many underlying physical and psychological causes of ED. Reduced blood flow to the penis (Arteriosclerosis) and nerve damage (Diabetic Neuropathy) are the most common physical causes. An erection requires a precise sequence of events. ED can occur when any one of these events is disrupted. Reducing blockage and increasing circulation through EDTA chelation, can assure a healthy blood flow throughout the entire body.

Fatigue: Weakness, exhaustion, lack of energy and headaches are all symptoms of fatigue. A good diet, exercise, and plenty of sleep will ensure a healthy lifestyle, and help increase circulation in the body along with a safe, effective chelation program.

Fibromyalgia: Chronic pain characterized by widespread aches, pain and stiffness, general fatigue, and sleep disturbances. The most common sites of pain include the neck, back, shoulders, pelvic girdle and hands, but any body part can be affected. There are multiple physiological abnormalities in someone with FM, including low levels of blood flow to the thalamus region of the brain. Increasing circulation through oral chelation can help the body function closer to normal. Learn more about Fibromyalgia including how to manage symptoms.

Gangrene: The death of an area of the body that has been injured or diseased, usually due to loss of blood supply. The area becomes deprived of oxygen and turns black and shrinks when the tissue dies. Reducing blockage and increasing circulation through EDTA chelation therapy, can assure a healthy blood flow throughout the body.

Glaucoma: Associated with elevated pressure in the eye that leads to damage of the optic nerve. This is believed to be caused by poor blood flow to the optic nerve. Without nourishment from the blood, fibers of the optic nerve can die. Increasing circulation with liquid chelation therapy brings blood rich in oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body.

Heart Failure: A condition in which the heart can’t pump enough blood throughout the body. Reducing blockage and increasing circulation through chelation therapy, can assure a healthy blood flow with oxygen and nutrients to the heart.

Heavy Metal Poisoning: The toxic accumulation of heavy metals in the soft tissues of the body. They may enter the body in food, water, air, or by absorption through the skin.

  • Aluminum – Has a tendency to accumulate in the brain and bones. It comes from everyday products: nasal spray, cooking utensils, food additives, antacids, buffered aspirin, automobile exhaust, aluminum soda cans, tobacco smoke, etc. It causes forgetfulness, bone softening, soft tissue damage, and cardiac arrest.
  • Arsenic – Can be found in food, water and household items. It begins by causing headaches, confusion and drowsiness. As it develops, symptoms include convulsions, vomiting, diarrhea and hair loss. Organs affected are the lungs, skin, kidneys and liver.
  • Iron (Hemachromatosis) – Is caused by an excess of iron in the blood. It is commonly caused by consuming large quantities of iron supplement pills. It may also be caused by consuming tap water. It causes damage primarily to the brain and liver. Iron toxicity can eventually lead to liver failure.
  • Lead – Can damage nerve connections and cause blood and brain disorders, as it affects the Central Nervous System. Long term exposure can cause nephropathy and colic-like abdominal pains.
  • Mercury – Is a neurotoxin, meaning it affects the nervous system. The degree of risk varies depending on the amount of mercury, the form, how often exposed, and the age of the person. Symptoms include sensory impairment, memory loss, tremors, personality changes and headaches.
  • EDTA Chelation removes heavy metals and excessive minerals from the body, reducing the risk for overload or toxicity. Learn more about the benefits of chelation therapy for heavy metal poisoning.

High Blood Pressure: Can cause angina attacks, strokes, as well as very painful, sometimes life ending heart attacks. The heart has to work harder to supply blood to all areas of the body, due to build up in the arteries and veins. A healthy diet and regular exercise, along with an effective chelation program, can strengthen the circulatory system and build a stronger heart.

Hypertension (HBP): A chronic elevation of arterial blood pressure which is a primary risk factor for coronary heart disease and stroke. The exact cause of hypertension is unknown, but there are many conditions that could contribute to its symptoms. These include: obesity, lack of exercise, stress, dehydration, heavy salt intake, aging, excessive drinking, abnormalities in the nervous system and circulatory & kidney problems. A healthy diet and regular exercise, along with an effective EDTA chelation program, can strengthen the circulatory system and build a stronger heart.

Intermittent Claudication: Claudication is crampy leg pain that occurs during exercise, especially walking. The pain is due to insufficient blood flow in the legs (caused by blocked arteries). Intermittent means the pain comes and goes. It is the most prominent symptom of PAD (Peripheral Artery Disease). Reducing blockage and increasing circulation through oral EDTA chelation, can assure a healthy blood flow throughout the body.

Ischemia: A condition in which the blood flow (and thus oxygen) is restricted to a part of the body. Ischemic Heart Disease is the term given to heart problems caused by narrowed heart arteries. Ischemia often causes chest pains or discomfort known as Angina, and can often lead to a heart attack. Other terms for this are Atherosclerosis and Arteriosclerosis. Strokes are also caused by obstruction of blood flow. Reducing blockage and increasing circulation through oral chelation therapy, can assure a healthy blood flow throughout the body.

Macular Degeneration: A chronic eye disease that occurs when the tissue in the macula (the part of the retina responsible for central vision), deteriorates. The exact cause of macular degeneration is unknown, but there are contributing risk factors that include: age, obesity, high cholesterol levels and high blood pressure. A healthy diet, along with a safe and effective liquid EDTA chelation program can increase blood circulation to all parts of the body.

Parkinson’s Disease: A disease that causes a progressive loss of nerve cell function in the part of the brain that controls muscle movement, muscle control and balance. The disease develops as cells are destroyed in certain parts of the brain stem. Parkinson’s also impairs nerve endings in the heart. Not all cases are alike. Some symptoms include: Loss of balance, shaking, slow movements, sleep disorders and speech difficulties. Increasing circulation with liquid EDTA chelation therapy brings blood rich in oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body, increasing energy and alertness.

Peyronie’s Disease: A connective tissue disorder involving the growth of fibrous plaques in the soft tissue of the penis. Taking Vitamin E may help some men. Increasing blood flow by removing excess calcium deposits with oral chelation, along with the recommended Vitamin C & E intake can help the body function closer to normal.

Rheumatoid Arthritis: An autoimmune disease that causes chronic inflammation of the joints, tissues around the joints, as well as other organs in the body. This causes swelling, pain, stiffness and redness in the joints. Because EDTA acts as a good anti-inflammatory, along with the chelation process increasing blood flow, oral chelation therapy can help relieve pains and conditions caused by arthritis.

Senile Dementia: The mental deterioration that is associated with old age. Two major types are identified: those due to generalized atrophy (Alzheimer type,) and those due to vascular problems (mainly strokes). It is caused by progressive degeneration of the brain cells, due to hardening of the arteries (arteriosclerosis). Increasing circulation and reducing blockage with chelation therapy brings blood rich in oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body, increasing energy and alertness.

Skin Ulcers: A shallow wound that develops when the leg veins do not move the blood back toward the heart normally (Venous Insufficiency). The valves in the veins are damaged and allow some blood to back up in the vein. This slowed circulation causes fluid to seep into surrounding tissues, causing tissue breakdown and ulcers. Reducing blockage and increasing circulation through EDTA chelation therapy can help the body function closer to normal.

Strokes: An injury to the brain due to the interruption of the blood supply when an artery becomes blocked, or a blood vessel breaks. This causes destruction of a portion of the brain tissue that can lead to weakness, numbness, paralysis, speech difficulty and confusion. The two most common factors that increase the risk of having a stroke are: High Blood Pressure, which weakens the walls of the arteries; and Atherosclerosis, which narrows arteries. Increasing circulation and reducing blockage with liquid EDTA chelation therapy brings blood rich in oxygen and nutrients to all parts of the body.

Thrombophlebitis: The swelling of a vein caused by a blood clot, due to diminished blood flow. It usually occurs in the legs and causes local inflammation, pain, and swelling. Reducing blockage and increasing circulation through EDTA chelation therapy can help the body function closer to normal.

Transient Ischemic Attack (TIA): A “warning stroke” or “mini-stroke” that produces stroke-like symptoms, but with no lasting damage. TIA’s occur when a blood clot temporarily clogs an artery and part of the brain doesn’t get the blood it needs. EDTA chelation reduces the viscosity or “stickiness” of the blood, improving blood circulation throughout the entire body.
